HOW TO START A TERRACE GARDEN?

EASY TIPS TO FOLLOW

Introduction 

Do you know the actress Samantha who had started to grow vegetables on their terrace as a part of the "Grow with me"challenge with zero budget ? So let us start a roof garden with an easy effort.

Design and style : 

1.Waterproof layer 

Bitumen /asphalt roofing felt or bituminized fabrics are commonly used.

 1.SURFACE PREPARATION : cement slurry mixed with a Non shrink polymeric grouting compound .

2.COATING : Apply 2 coats of Cement based Polymer/Acrylic modified highly flexible waterproof coating @2kg / sqm

3.PROTECTIVE LAYER : 20 mm thick protective layer consisting 1:4:: Cement : Sand mortar mixed with Integral Waterproofing compound .

                                  

                                                 



 2. Roof membrane :

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) ,TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) and EPDM membrane roofing .

                        

3. Filter sheet

EPDM  or  Polypropylene Roll or HaGa Watering Mat Irrigation Fleece

                                   

                                               Best mat on budget 


4.Moisture blanket

It is possible to use cardboard or old blankets for budget friendly and commercial ones can be bought which don't degrade.

                              


5 .Drainage layer

Geotextile materials or plastic or gravel, sand, or geocomposites or PET or Bamaboo stems and nodes .

6. Soils and substrates

Light sub soils like crushed porus brick and limestone.                

                     




7. Seeds and plants 

Flowers : roses, petunias ,begonias and pansies.

Veggies : Tomatoes, radishes, peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, lettuce.

Herbs : mint, basil, chive 

Vines and climbers :, honeysuckle, ivy , Virginia creeper, clematis.

Dwarf trees and shrubs : Japanese maples, crabapples or lemon trees, dwarf conifers, junipers and pines.

10. Cost : Last but not least, how much are you willing to spend? You can start small and add on, buying more pots and plants.Laying tiles or stone, building raised beds and boxes, adding lighting and furniture can all start to add up. Plus, you may need more structural work to support them.

Mahua Mahua (Bassia latifolia), is an indigenous tree of high economic value. A characteristic tree of the dry region, it is found in north and central India.
