Major INSECT-PESTS in chilli author :- Ravula Madhuri

Important insect pest in chilli:-         

  1. Thrips

  2. Cutworms

  3. Podborers

  4. Aphids

Thrips:

These are small insects which feed on leaves by scrapping the epidermis sucking the oozed cell sap.The affected leaves turn brown,get curled and dry at the tips locally known as churda murda or bokdya.


Control measures:

  • Spray 0.1%malathion at 10 days interval.

  • Apply 10%phortegranules in soil@10kg/ha at the of transplanting.



Cutworms

The caterpillar remain  hidden in soil during day and damage the crop during night hours.The caterpillar cuts the plants at the ground level and feeds on tender leaves.They also feeds on the roots


Control measures:

Apply 5% chlorodane or heptachlor dust to the soil@50kg/ha.


Pod Borer:

The caterpillar oat leaves and later on bores the pod,which results in deterioration of quality and market price of the product.


Control measures: 

By spraying carbaryl 50w @ gm or zolene @3ml or Dimethoate(Rogor-30EC) or monocrotophous (monocil) tgi 1ml per liter water.

Aphids:

Aphids suck the sap from the plants.generally they attack the crop in winter months and at the later stages of the crop. The quality of the produce is spoiled by imparting blackish colour to the calyx and the pods.They also serve as vector to the virus.



Control measures:

The aphids can effectively controlled by spraying the crop with dimethoate ( Rogor 30EC) or methyl parathion (metacid -50EC) or phosphamidon (Demicron-100EC)@0.5 ml per liter water.
